"We are really enjoying the design of the new baths and kitchen,
and all of the cabinetry. This part of the house feels so much larger!"

About the Shepherd Park Renovation

This twenties era "Wardman Style" home was owned by a young couple with a baby daughter. Having lived there since 1992, the home was badly in need of renovation, and a radical re-organization of the space was called for.

A renovation, executed in the nineteen seventies, had blocked off the hallway that ran from the front door to the Kitchen, and included the addition of a large full bath, that gobbled up valuable space from a floor plan that was already space challenged. The scope of work included the design of a new Kitchen, new half bath and re-opening the hallway for easy access to the rear Kitchen.

We developed three plans for the re-organization of the first floor, and the one that was selected, offered a new Kitchen, that raised the floor of the neighboring old porch to the height of the new Kitchen and combined the space of both.

A dining island was combined with the stove and sink island, with counter height barstools for casual dining. The downstairs full bath was gutted, the hallway re-opened, with a hardwood floor to match the existing flooring found in the neighboring rooms was installed; a new half bath, was built, implementing the same parchment colored tile that was used in the Kitchen. Shaker style cherry cabinetry was used, with the new upper cabinets extending to the ceiling, for maximum storage.

While in the process of starting the demolition, the clients requested that design a plan for a new bathroom, off of the Master Bedroom upstairs, on what was the existing roof over top of the Kitchen. The plan that was selected changed the hallway outside the Master Bedroom into a dressing area, and the new Master Bathroom was planned to be light and bright; as a nod to the era in which the home was built, we specified white subway tile. A border of white Carerra Marble and Black granite, in a trellis pattern, was selected to add visual interest to the all white room, and a soft gray-blue was selected for the walls.

We did not overlook the exterior, and decided to give the front porch and front steps a lift as well, by cladding both in square cut bluestone, in an irregular random pattern. The entire renovation gave the classic home a much neede facelift, a new Kitchen, and a badly needed Master Bathroom. The clients have expressed their gratitude for the added space and functionality, as well as the fresh new aesthetic, that the renovation has afforded them.
